National Chemistry Week 2018

SMACS events

The theme for National Chemistry Week 2018 was “Out of this World”.

Decorate Hand

The week opened up with decorating the Hand Lab before the students returned to class on Monday

Training Day

A training day was held for all of our SMACS volunteers. We go over all the chemistry demos we plan to do as well as safety policies and cleanup procedures.

Bake Sale

SMACS, with the help of baked goods donated by faculty in the Department of Chemistry, held a very successful fundraiser. We sold off almost all the food!

Dunk Tank and Grill Out

Students love to dunk their chemistry professor on Dunk Tank day. We sold a ton of food that was grilled fresh on location.

Demos on the Drill Field

SMACS showcased a variety of chemistry demos on the drill field. The crowd favorite was the “Ping Pong Ball Explosion”. It made for a great spectacle.

Costume Carnival and Tailgate Prep

We participated in the Mississippi State costume carnival held every year for Halloween. Even after a long day and braving the rain, the SMACS officers pulled together and prepared for the Tailgate Extravaganza the following day.

Tailgate Prep

Here are some behind-the-scenes shots of SMACS preparing for NCW activities. We also spotted our “Demo Day” event on the front page of the Starkville Daily News!

ChemDawg All-Stars Photo Contest

SMACS teamed up with Overstreet Elementary School and Henderson-Ward Stewart Elementary School to have a National Chemistry Week photo contest. Classes were encouraged to create a photo that emphasized the theme, “Out of this World”, for NCW 2018. We had some awesome submissions!
